Flipped Classroom

The Metrolina Library Association offered a free Flipped Classroom workshop recently with guest speaker Michael Frye from Winstonn-Salem State University.  The workshop offered some tips for adding the flipped concept into library instruction and challenged the group to brainstorm on some flipped concepts.

At South Piedmont Community College, we are trying flipped classrooms for the first time this year.  Some instructional classes have minimal work done prior to the visit with students and others require most of the background information covered in advance. This has opened the classes up to more interactive projects and active learning facilitated by the instructional librarian.  (For example, our topic selection class utilizes an online mind mapping activity.)  Along with flipping library instruction we have also created an online equivalent of our visits for use with online only classes.

Have you tried flipping your library instruction yet? -Jo

Personal Librarian Connects Up with Other Efforts

As we kick off the new year at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte we are really excited about continuing our efforts regarding our Personal Librarian program. This year it seems that the PL program is in good company with several other great programs designed to help our students.

One program, ACE, is targeting first generation college students. Students were allowed to opt into this new and very special program that pairs them up with a faculty or staff member. The program is reliant on volunteers from both the faculty/staff and student sides so there is a lot of enthusiasm to go around. Staff and faculty mentors will be meeting with the students on a regular basis and hopefully remain an advocate throughout their whole time at JWU.

Another program, Jumpstart, is part of our check in process. Students are also asked to volunteer for this program based on certain criteria. The students that do opt in will be treated to several short and informative sessions which help them lay the groundwork for success by, among other things, learning the various ways college differs from high school. They will also be introduced to a multitude of support resources designed to foster their success.

Lastly, thanks to the incredible initial efforts of some of our culinary and baking and pastry faculty and their work with the staff in residential life we have a budding Living Learning Community program for our baking and pastry and culinary students. This year we will be connecting the Personal Librarian program up to the LLCs through our connection with the English Composition courses. Students that have opted into this program will enjoy not just a PL, but also unique connections to chef instructors, invites to interesting events and programs, and a curriculum that is tied to themes which in turn pull from the shared campus read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba.

We are really excited about all these ways to interact with students. It seems like we will get to test out some of the most promising of ideas from both The Personal Librarian: Enhancing the Student Experience as well as Fundamentals for the Academic Liaison!!! –Richard
